Someone read the check, someone else did arithmetic on a napkin or in their head, and the group argued about whether the tip should be calculated before or after tax. It was slow, inexact, and occasionally resulted in someone quietly pocketing the difference.
Over the past two decades, technology has transformed nearly every part of this experience. Here is the story of how it happened.
Before Smartphones: The Napkin Era
Before the 2000s, group bill splitting was entirely manual. The most common approach was to pass the check around the table, have each person estimate what they owed plus their share of tax and tip, and collect cash. The total never quite matched, someone always shorted the tip, and one person inevitably went home having paid too much while another paid too little.
The early internet offered calculators — some websites in the late 1990s and early 2000s built tip calculators that let you enter a total and a tip percentage. These were technically useful but required access to a desktop computer, which meant they were essentially useless at an actual restaurant table.
The Calculator Phone Era (2000–2008)
The first real shift came with mobile phones. Even basic feature phones had calculators, which meant you could do the math at the table without mental arithmetic. The next advance was optical character recognition (OCR) applied to receipt photos. Apps like Receipts by Wave and various expense management tools could take a photo of a receipt and extract text from it automatically. Early OCR receipt scanning was imperfect — it struggled with faded ink, unusual fonts, foreign languages, and non-standard receipt formats — but it was faster than manual entry.
The problem was that OCR could read text but could not understand receipts. It might correctly identify that "Grilled Salmon" appeared on the receipt, but it could not reliably identify the associated price, distinguish the item from a modifier, or understand the receipt's structure well enough to produce a clean itemized list.
Bill-splitting apps with OCR required significant user correction — you would scan, then spend a similar amount of time fixing errors as you would have spent entering the items manually.
The AI Era (2022–Present)
The emergence of large language models and multimodal AI in 2022 and 2023 fundamentally changed what was possible in receipt parsing. Modern AI does not just read text — it understands the semantic structure of documents. When an AI model processes a restaurant receipt, it understands the difference between an item name, a price, a modifier, a subtotal, a tax line, and a tip line. It can handle handwritten receipts, foreign-language receipts, and unusual formatting.

The best tools reduce friction; they do not eliminate social judgment.
What Comes Next
The likely next evolution is deeper integration: receipt scanning that automatically generates payment requests, AI that remembers your preferences across meals (you always split the appetizers equally, but drinks are always individual), and payment rails that allow near-instant international settlements. Some of this already exists in prototype form; widespread adoption tends to lag the technology by three to five years.
